Technical Skills

I have a number of technical skills that significantly improve my ability to conduct high quality research.

I have experience with: (X)HTML, XML, CSS, Python, R, PHP and MySQL. I am currently learning C# to assist me with some of my more complex stimuli creation.

I am proficient in the use of these programs/packages:

Microsoft Office including 2007, 2010, Open Office, Libre Office, Adobe Photoshop and Actinic. I also have experience with open source website associated software such as WordPress as well as open source image galleries, e-commerce and forums.

I am proficient in the use of a number of specialist software programs for academic needs such as, Experiment Builder, Data Viewer, Read and Write, Inspiration, Dragon Naturally Speaking, SPSS and Endnote.

Eye tracking experience: I have experience with eye tracking hardware and software. In particular I have extensive experience with the SR Research Eyelink 1000 eye tracker. I have created my own experiments and stimuli in Experiment Builder and carried out the data collection in the eye tracker. I have trained a number of other members my research group (undergraduates, postgraduates and staff) on how to setup and run experiments in the eye tracker.

Experimental stimuli generation: I have created an open source PHP script which batch generates reading stimuli images for use in eye tracking experiments. The script also generates the relevant interest area files to assist with the analysis of the experimental data. By creating this script a great deal of time can be saved and modifications can be easily made. This has already been used in my own experiments as well for undergraduate project students and other researchers.

Due to my extensive experience with Adobe Photoshop, I have assisted with image generation needs within the department. I have created complex image stimuli which have been used in an experiment by Dr. Valerie Benson. I have also trained and assisted postgraduates with their image generation for various experiments.
